Urban Safari in Taipei – Video Mapping at the White Night 2022
In October 2022, the projectUrban Safariby Julien Nonnon took over the streets ofTaipei, inTaiwan, for the White Night. This major cultural event provided an ideal experimental ground to deploy a work ofurban video mappingblending digital art, heritage, and cultural reflection.
Integrated into the official program of the White Night,Urban Safari Taipeiwas presented asthree video mapping installations, each designed as a fleeting appearance in public space. The monumental projections transformed facades and architectural volumes into narrative supports, inviting passersby to an immersive stroll between reality and imagination.

An artistic research on fashion and Taiwanese traditions
At the heart of the project, significant research was conducted onfashion, clothing traditionsand the cultural identity of Taiwan. The projected characters, anthropomorphic figuresinspired by local fauna and mythologies, embody this visual exploration. Their appearance blends contemporary references and traditional legacies, highlighting the richness and cultural diversity of the island. inspirées de la faune et des mythologies locales, incarnent cette exploration visuelle. Leur apparence mêle références contemporaines et héritages traditionnels, soulignant la richesse et la diversité culturelle de l’île.
Through these hybrid silhouettes, Urban Safari questions how clothing, ornaments, and aesthetic codes contribute to the construction of individual and collective identity. The projection then becomes a storytelling tool, revealing stories buried in the very fabric of the city.

Video mapping as a universal language in public space
Designed to be accessible to all, the project is aimed at both residents and international visitors. Theurban video mapping, with its ephemeral and spectacular nature, allows for the creation of an immediate collective experience, without language barriers. In Taipei, the works have naturally integrated into the flow of the city, dialoguing with its architecture, rhythms, and nighttime energy.
Urban Safari in Taipei thus illustrates the ability ofdigital art in the cityto create bridges between cultures, to enhance local traditions while embedding them in a contemporary narrative. An artistic intervention where light becomes a vector of memory, questioning, and sharing.
